After 10 years of marriage, Liudmila’s husband emptied their bank account, set fire to her green card, and disappeared.

She left Russia for the U.S. with her two children and only $200. They stayed with friends for months, then in a shelter.

They found stability in their own apartment at the YWCA Family Village Redmond, and Liudmila enrolled in college — a step toward building a better life for her family. Their home was built with support from the Housing Trust Fund, our state’s best tool for creating and maintaining affordable homes.

Everyone deserves the opportunity to live in a safe, healthy, affordable home. Yet thousands of individuals and families are experiencing homelessness across Washington. To end homelessness, we need more affordable homes. The state should invest $200 million in the Housing Trust Fund.
