“One of the Hardest Things I Ever Did Was to Leave My Home”
“I started calling shelters and they didn’t have any space at that time. Each night we would have to find a friend’s house to stay in.” In 2009, Zaneta Reid left her abusive boyfriend in order to start a better life for herself and her four sons. Soon after the break-up, Zaneta’s ex-boyfriend came to her house and tried to kill her by strangling her. She went to court to testify against him, and he was sentenced to nine years in prison. Zaneta came to StoryCorps to talk about what happened next and how it led to her leaving her home.
Zaneta’s story aired on KUOW in June of 2015. It was featured in the Firesteel blog post, “Domestic Violence Survivor’s Story Is All Too Common.”
