Once Homeless, Family Feels “Blessed To Wake Up Another Day”
“I remember going to REI and looking at tents that would hold a family of five,” says Sherry Gilliard to her husband, Franklin. The Gilliards never thought they’d experience homelessness. Then the Great Recession hit, and their small business struggled. Drowning in debt, they eventually lost their home and moved into a shelter.
Their story, recorded at Catholic Community Services in Tacoma, aired on NPR’s Morning Edition on Nov. 28, 2014. It was also featured in a Firesteel blog post, “How Did I Get Here?”
