Following the lead of San Francisco media organizations, several Seattle outlets will focus on homelessness this Wednesday, June 28 2017.
The online journal Crosscut launched the #SeaHomeless hashtag for the first time last year, and rallied other local media, including The Seattle Times, King5, Seattle Weekly, Real Change, and Q13Fox, to join the effort.
Crosscut’s editor-in-chief, Greg Hanscom, writes:
The central idea is to push our coverage of homelessness beyond spot news and band-aid solutions, and to look at root causes and long-term remedies. Some news outlets will be surfacing recent work in this area, while others will be producing original stories.
We encourage you to follow the coverage, and to join the Twitter conversation using the #SeaHomeless hashtag on Wednesday. If you’re unfamiliar with using Twitter for advocacy, check out our video tutorial.
For our part, Firesteel will share the voices of people who have experienced homelessness, including participants of the StoryCorps Finding Our Way project. We’ll also take the opportunity to promote solutions we believe in, such as passing Homeless Services Funding Bill 1570 through the Washington Legislature.
I look forward to seeing you online this Wednesday!
