Calling all twitterers and Facebook fans! Social networks are a great place to share your thoughts on housing, and to rally your friends to advocate for policies that will end homelessness. Take social media to the next level! Engage your contacts in advocacy, and use your online voice to communicate with your elected officials about topics that matter to you.
Social Media 201
Join us for Social Media 201, a free Google+ Hangout video conference, on Monday, Jan. 13. Joaquin Uy, Communications Specialist for the Washington Low Income Housing Alliance, and our own Erin Murphy will share ideas for using social media for housing advocacy.
Whether you’ll be at Housing and Homelessness Advocacy Day physically or in spirit, your tweets and Facebook posts will complement the face-to-face conversations advocates will have with state lawmakers on Jan. 28. Learn how to make the most of your posts!
We know that advocacy is needed year-round, so we’ll discuss ways to keep online conversations going after Advocacy Day, too.
There are two ways to join Social Media 201:
Option 1: Online
Attend from anywhere you like via Google Hangout, or watch us on YouTube. The Hangout portion will be from noon to 12:45 pm. Please register now, and you’ll get an email on Monday morning with details for joining the Hangout. (Can’t join us on Monday? Don’t worry! You can watch the video on YouTube later.)
Option 2: In-person
Go to Seattle University from noon to 1:45 pm. There, our partners at the Seattle University Project on Family Homelessness will present a live training session after the Hangout. They’ll also be on hand to help with any tech issues or difficulties you might have. Visit the event page to register and for more information about location, parking and the agenda.
Social Media 101
Still trying to grasp the basics of Twitter and Facebook? The Social Media 101 Hangout we shared last year will get you up to speed quickly! You’ll learn the essentials, like how to use a hashtag on Twitter and post a photo on Facebook.
After you check out the video and practice a bit, you’ll be ready to move up to Social Media 201. Don’t forget to register!
