Today is Social Media Day of Action for #HHAD2014

Housing and Homelessness Advocacy Day (#HHAD2014) is Jan. 28, just a couple of weeks away. Help us get the word out by participating in the Social Media Day of Action TODAY. Join the conversation on Facebook and Twitter to raise awareness about policies that will help end homelessness, and also encourage people to join us in Olympia for #HHAD2014.

Here are five fun ways to join the social media party:

1. Make this image your avatar on Twitter and/or Facebook. (Thanks to our friend Stephanie from Housing Development Consortium for designing this awesome graphic!)

2. Tweet and post about Advocacy Day using the hashtag #HHAD2014. Include links to the Washington Low Income Housing Alliance’s Advocacy Day page. Some examples from the Housing Alliance:

3. Retweet and repost what others are saying about #HHAD2014.

4. Post an “unselfie.” As the Housing Alliance explains, “A selfie is type of self-portrait photograph usually taken with a camera phone and then posted to a social media site, often accompanied with the hashtag #selfie. An unselfie encourages people to take a self-portrait and tie it to a social issue or cause. It’s easy. First, write clearly how you’ll be participating in Advocacy Day, maybe you’re volunteering or will meet with your legislator. Feel free to list more than one. Then, hold the piece of paper in front of you, showing your personal pledge, and take a picture. Add the hashtags #HHAD2014 and #unselfie to the post.”

Here’s a great example:

5. Get creative! Post images or photos related to #HHAD2014. We created this one on the imgur meme generator.

Beyond the Social Media Day of Action

We’ve teamed up with the Housing Alliance to create two webinars on using social media for advocacy. Social Media 201 is geared toward advocates who already use Facebook and Twitter personally, and want to take their advocacy to the next level. Watch it to learn strategies for engaging your online networks on Advocacy Day and throughout the year. And be sure to read the blog post that Joaquin from the Housing Alliance wrote to follow up on the webinar; he deftly addresses questions like how to use humor in social media advocacy for housing.

Social Media 101 teaches the basics of Twitter and Facebook. Watch it if you’re wondering how to post a photo on Facebook, and what is a hashtag, anyway?

See you online!
